Migration route

Migrating from OpenCart to Shopify

OpenCart is a lightweight, self-hosted, open-source platform - simpler to run than Magento or PrestaShop, but still requiring you to manage your own server, PHP version, security patching and PCI compliance. Moving to Shopify trades that self-managed setup for a hosted, managed platform. Because OpenCart's data model is comparatively simple, the migration itself is usually more straightforward than from a heavier enterprise platform, but product options, multi-store configuration and extensions still need deliberate mapping rather than a raw export/import.

Why merchants move off OpenCart

OpenCart's appeal is that it's free and lightweight, but that also means you're on your own for hosting, security updates, PCI compliance and keeping extensions compatible across core version upgrades. Many OpenCart stores are run by small teams without dedicated developers, and the ongoing burden of applying security patches and troubleshooting extension conflicts becomes disproportionate to the size of the business over time. Shopify removes that hosting and security-patching burden in exchange for a managed platform fee.

A common trigger is the extension ecosystem: OpenCart extensions (built as OCMOD or VQMOD modifications) vary in quality and often stop being maintained, which becomes a growing risk as the core platform moves forward and a store's extension stack ages.

Product options, categories and the data model

OpenCart represents product variants through "options" - choices like size or color attached to a product, each optionally affecting price and stock. This is conceptually close to Shopify's variant system, which makes the core product mapping more direct than from platforms with a full EAV attribute model. Shopify still caps products at three variant option dimensions, so OpenCart products with more option groups than that need some options moved to metafields rather than variants.

OpenCart categories can be nested and a product can belong to multiple categories, similar in spirit to Shopify collections but structured differently under the hood - OpenCart's category tree doesn't map one-to-one onto Shopify's manual/smart collection model, so the collection structure typically needs to be planned rather than copied wholesale.

Multi-store, URLs and extensions

OpenCart supports running multiple storefronts from a single installation, sharing one admin and one product catalog across stores with different settings. Shopify's nearest equivalents are Shopify Markets for regional/currency variation within one store, or genuinely separate Shopify stores for distinct brands - neither is a direct architectural match, so which approach fits depends on what the multi-store setup is actually being used for.

OpenCart's SEO-friendly URL settings are configurable per store, so relevant indexed URLs need to be mapped to Shopify's fixed URL patterns (/products/{handle}, /collections/{handle}) and redirected when they change. This reduces avoidable loss of search visibility without promising unchanged rankings. OpenCart extensions handling shipping, payment or catalog customization also need individual evaluation - a Shopify app replacement, a custom build, or confirmation they're no longer needed - during the assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Does OpenCart's product options system map cleanly to Shopify variants?

More cleanly than from platforms with a full custom-attribute model, since OpenCart options are already close in concept to Shopify variants. Products with more than three option groups need some options mapped to Shopify metafields instead of variants.

What happens to my OpenCart multi-store setup?

There's no direct one-to-one equivalent on Shopify. Depending on whether you need shared catalog with regional variation or genuinely separate brands, we help you choose between Shopify Markets and separate Shopify stores based on your actual requirements.

Will my OpenCart URLs redirect automatically?

No. Shopify's URL structure is fixed, so every indexed OpenCart URL needs an explicit 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent - this is planned as part of the migration, not left for after launch.

What happens to my OpenCart extensions?

Each active extension is evaluated individually during the assessment: replaced with a Shopify app, rebuilt as a custom app or theme customization, or dropped if it's no longer needed. We flag this before scoping the project.
